I SHOULD STOP PILLORYING ISRAEL’S LEADERS
(ALTHOUGH THEY DESERVE IT)*

As I read the remarks at the recent Herzliya Conference about the performance of Israel’s military and political leadership during the run-up to the war in Lebanon and during the war itself, I was overwhelmed with the mixed emotions of laughing and crying. Their performances were not as clever as the Marx Brothers although a smidgen funnier than the Ritz Brothers. Unfortunately, when I viewed their performances in the context of Israel’s future, I had a pain in my heart and I was moved to tears.

Then, I realize that, for the most part, this is the way of man. Aggressive, self-serving scumbags propel themselves into positions of power. But in “democracies” such as the United States and Israel, the aggressive, self-serving scumbags are helped in their drive by the voters. In the United States, it doesn’t much matter. As a nation, we are to powerful to be brought down by this kind of leadership, at least in the short run.

Abraham Lincoln said this very aptly in his first inaugural address: “While the people retain their virtue and vigilance, no administration, by any extreme of wickedness or folly, can very seriously injure the government in the space of four years.”

Hanging by a thread

Israel, however, is in a different position. It is very, very far from having the power of the United States. As a matter of reality, its future hangs by the proverbial thread. And yet, its citizens continue to elect administrations of wickedness and folly time after time. So it’s way past time to ask where is the “virtue and vigilance” of the citizens of Israel, the electorate?

One excuse is that despite all the talk about “democracy,” the Israeli electoral system is in practice very undemocratic. The voters do not vote for individuals but for parties. The members of the Knesset do not represent individual geographical districts and, in essence, are not beholden to individual voters. The prime minister and his cabinet officers are equally removed from the voters. So it’s essential for the voters to become active within the parties to shape their platforms and select leaders that reflect the desires of the voters. That is, if such leaders can be found in the Jewish state.

Nostalgic for the Kremlin

It is also very unfortunate that too many of Israel’s citizens still have their hearts in the old Kremlin. That’s not the Kremlin based on its actions but the Kremlin based on the “humanitarian” outlook and actions it demanded of others. The Jews early on jumped on that philosophy and while most everyone else in the world jumped off, the Jews are still trying to ride that dead horse. That’s a big curse that is dragging Israel down.

Another unfortunate aspect of Israeli politics involves the “holier-than -thou” communities. The rabbis who lead these communities have become politicians, in the worst sense of the term. Ethics, morality and welfare of the nation are unknown commandments to these politician/rabbis when they interfere with their drive for power and money. They are willing to support any government, no matter how corrupt or detrimental to a strong Israel, if they get to keep their political prerogatives and get money for their yeshivas. They never seem to consider that without a country there will be no place for their yeshivas.

To help change the political outlook, it is incumbent on the “holier-than-thou” voters to recognize that their rabbinical leaders are not their best political leaders—and do something about it. Most of the politician rabbis do not reflect the strong national feelings of most of their followers. The followers can work within parties with a strong national platform, or at least vote for those parties. Let their rabbinical leaders stick to religion and not stick it to their followers.

Change the system

Something is very obviously wrong with a political system where the politicians change their politics and parties more often than they change their underwear. Opportunities are developing to effect changes in the system, and it is time for the people who are unhappy with rockets raining down on them, with Jewish communities being uprooted, with money and weapons being turned over to the people that want to destroy Israel, with corruption in just about every place, with police brutality, with so many people living below the poverty line, with incompetence in the military, and with the many other sins of commission and omission, took make their voices heard and their presence felt.

WINNING NUMBERS

Jacob is one of the lucky ones because he's the only one of his family to have survived two years in a concentration camp. He's now nearing 90 and his only remaining joy is the national lottery, which he's been playing for years without success. But then he wins the big one, a prize of $10 million. A journalist from the Times calls on him for a story.

Jacob tells him, "As I'm the only one in my family to have survived the concentration camps, this has helped me decide how to make use of my large win. So, I've decided to donate $5 million to the Save the Children Fund, $3 million to the Simon Wiesenthal Center, $750,000 to the Jewish Museum, $750,000 Hadassah Hospital and $500,000 to be shared amongst my friends. I'm also thinking of donating $1 from my pocket to the Nazi party."

The journalist is surprised. "But Jacob, how can you think of donating even $1 to the Nazi party after everything that’s happened to you and your family?"

Jacob rolls up his sleeve, points to his arm, smiles and replies, "It's only fair. They gave me the winning numbers."

MAN OF THE HOUSE

The husband had just finished reading a new book entitled,
"You Can Be THE MAN of Your House."

He stormed to his wife in the kitchen and announced, "From now on, you need to know that I am the man of this house and my word is Law. You will prepare me a gourmet meal tonight, and when I'm finished eating my meal, you will serve me a sumptuous dessert.
After dinner, you are going to go upstairs with me and we will have the kind of sex that I want.
Afterwards, you are going to draw me a bath so I can relax. You will wash my back and towel me dry and bring me my robe. Then, you will massage my feet and hands.
Then tomorrow, guess who's going to dress me and comb my hair?"

The wife replied, "The fuckin' funeral director would be my first guess."
